Van
Phuc
Silk
Making
Village:
During
their
stay
in
Hanoi,
most
tourists
insist
on a
trip
to
Van
Phuc
Silk
Village,
the
famous
silk
village
of
Hanoi
to
contemplate
the
genuine
traditional
silk-making
industry.
Van
Phuc
Silk
Village
is
situated
on
the
banks
of
Nhue
River,
8 km
southwest
of
Ha
Noi.
The
village
has
been
much
well
known
for
its
traditional
sericulture,
weaving,
and
silk
products.
Tourists
coming
here
are
lured
by
various
beautiful
shirts,
crafts,
ties,
dresses
and
many
other
things
made
of
silk
available
in
the
village.
What
is
special
is
that
the
silk
is
made
by
very
simple
looms,
which
is
the
genuinely
traditional
Vietnamese
way
of
making
silk.
If
you
are
going
to
buy
something
from
Vietnam
as
gifts
for
those
at
home,
silk
and
clothes
made
of
silk
are
available
around
in
the
village
for
your
choice.
Though
the
days
when
Vietnam's
silk
was
reserved
for
nobility
are
long
gone,
what
would
never
change
is
the
sense
of
romance
and
luxury
imparted
by
silk,
a
luminous
cloth
type.
With
2000
years
of
history
behind
them,
the
silk
weavers
of
Van
Phuc
Silk
village
are
still
busy,
weaving
dreams.
-
Dong
Ho
Folk
Painting
Making
Village:
Dong
Ho
Village
is
located
on
the
Duong
River’s
left
bank
in
Thuan
Thanh
District,
Bac
Ninh
Province.
The
village
is
about
35km
north
from
Ha
Noi
and
has
perfected
the
art
of
woodcarving
paintings.
They
traditionally
used
do
paper,
made
from
the
bark
of
poonah
trees
found
in
deep
jungle.
The
bark
was
coated
with
white
powder
from
the
ground
sea
shells.
The
prints
were
then
drawn,
carved
into
wood
blocks,
and
reprinted
on
the
handmade,
natural
do
paper.
The
vibrant
colors
used
for
printing
were
gathered
from
nature
as
well,
the
black
color
created
from
the
charcoal
of
dried
bamboo
branches
and
leaves,
the
red
from
powdered
gravel,
the
indigo
from
forest
leaves,
the
blue
from
verdigris,
the
amber
from
turpentine,
the
yellow
from
aniseed,
and
the
white
from
ground
egg
and
sea
shells.
-
Duyen
Thai
& Ha
Thai
Lacquer
Making
Village:
Like
all
other
ancient
villages
in
the
Red
River
Delta,
Ha
Thai
has
a
communal
house
and
pagoda
for
worshipping
the
village
founder.
Unlike
most
villages
it
is
also
famous
far
and
wide
for
its
distinguished
lacquer
ware
that
has
existed
for
over
2000
years.
Ha
Thai
lacquer
ware
products
are
made
with
a
centuries-old
technique
of
applying
and
polishing
layer
upon
layer
of
Vietnamese
lacquer
(Rhus
Succedanea).
Combined
with
egg
shell
and
mother-of-pearl
inlays,
the
lacquer
ware
found
here
comes
in
thousands
designs
and
models.
Among
the
most
common
are
boxes,
trays,
vases,
pots,
albums,
lamp-shades,
plates
and
paintings.
Each
product
is
not
only
pleasing
to
the
eye,
but
also
useful
and
durable

Chuong
Conical
Hat
Making
Village:
This
small
village
of
Ha
Tay
Province,
40
kilometers
on
the
west
of
Hanoi,
has
maintained
its
reputation
for
over
three
centuries.
Just
like
Van
Phuc
villagers
with
their
fine
silks,
Chuong
people
have
their
own
pride
for
the
famous
Non.
In
the
old
time,
the
Vietnamese
wore
the
conical
hats
to
hide
the
rain
and
the
sun.
The
conical
hats
fabricated
with
a
bamboo
frame
and
covered
by
leaf.
Each
household
of
Chuong
village
can
produce
the
conical
hat.
The
materials
are
simple:
leaves
for
covering;
bamboo
for
the
frame,
rattan
strings
and
now
the
industrial
thread,
some
rattans
to
fabricate
the
frame.
Although
it
is
such
simple
only,
a
white
leaf
conical
with
roll
and
equal
thread
line
require
a
talent
producer.
There
are
various
kinds
of
conical
hat,
thick,
solid
or
thin,
elegant.
In
the
old
time,
there
were
hats
with
silk
tasseled
trap,
bamboo
hat
worn
by
Buddhist
monks,
by
soldiers.
